This
project involves the remodeling of a mid-century ranch residence.
Our
clients wished to upgrade the Kitchen and Dining spaces and
create a second floor master bedroom, bath and study. Despite
a significant increase in square footage, we also sought to
maintain the integrity or "horizontality" of the ranch
typology.
Our
solution was to respect the plan configuaration of the First
floor but produce a series of "surprise" interventions.
This
approach prompted us to propose a " vertical" entrance
space connecting the two interior levels. Upon
entry, the second storey is revealed as
a bridge enabling light to penetrate from the North and South.
The bridge also serves tto separate the master bedroom from
the other sleeping rooms.
The
reconfiguraed entrance sequnce encourages vistors to enter via
the Kitchen, rather than enetr the adjecent family room. The
Kitchens generous ceiling height enables light to penetrate
the space from above and from the garden tto the South.
The
impact of the seconnd storey addition is isubdued
by
an open pergola construction that provides shade and privvacy
to the street facing living areas.
